This year we decided to engage in  the meat goat industry. With the demand for goat meat on the rise in our area, we are hoping to help supply the needs of the consumer with a high yielding goat carcass.

Our primary breed we will be working with is the Kiko goat, chosen for their hardiness,  high feed conversion rate, parasite resistance and maternal instinct. Our foundation does are Kiko, Kiko-crossbreds, and Savanna-crossbreds.  We have two herd sires; one  Kiko buck and one Savanna buck. We plan to incorporate Lamancha genetics into our meat herd for increased body size and extra milk, producing a more profitable, high-yielding goat.

Our herd management system is supplemented. Our goats are out on pasture during the day. In the evening they are given a grain ration.  During the winter months the goats are given hay and grain. They are also offered loose minerals as a supplement. We keep production records on our goats to evaluate our genetics.

At the 2010 Will County 4-H Meat Goat Show, our does placed well. We had 1st place 3-6 month old doe, 2nd place 6-9 month old doe, and 2nd place doe 36 months and older. We had Grand Champion Junior doe. The grand champion doe was noted as having the overall composition, thickness,  muscle and meatiness with a  smaller frame. These results are good given that our meat goats are production animals and are not bred for the show ring.
